“Iedereen hier doet iets voor de gemeenschap.”

In Kathmandu kwam Engelsman Lawrence Nutton (1946) het Amsterdams Ballon Gezelschap tegen. Op zijn suggestie kozen ze planeten als thema voor de show die opgevoerd werd in Goa. Voor het eerst van zijn leven stond Lawrence op het podium.

Hij kwam jaren later in Ruigoord terecht en werd verliefd. Hij vond het een paradijs, met veel bomen, rust en een zwemmeertje voor de kinderen. Elke zaterdagavond kwam iedereen bijeen in de busbar, naast het huis van Lawrence. Er werd vergaderd, gedronken, gerookt en gedanst.

Op de achtergrond heeft Van der Vegt de kerk geschilderd. Lawrence runt de bar en doet de inkopen voor de kerk, het cultureel centrum van het dorp. In zijn handen heeft hij een astrolabium. Bij moeilijke beslissingen, zoals contracten met het Havenbedrijf, wil hij nog wel eens de sterren raadplegen.

Lawrence Nutton “Everyone here does something for the community.”

Englishman Lawrence Nutton (b. 1946) met up with the Amsterdam Balloon Company in Kathmandu. For their show in Goa, Lawrence suggested using the planets as a theme for the show. For the first time in his life, Lawrence was on stage.

Many years later, he visited Ruigoord and fell in love. He found his paradise, with lots of trees, tranquillity and a small swimming pond for the kids. Every Saturday evening everybody gathered in the bar of the Magic Bus, next to Lawrence’s place. People drank, smoked and danced.

Van der Vegt painted the church in the background. Lawrence runs the bar and makes the purchases for the church, the village’s cultural centre. He is holding an astrolabe, which, from time to time, he uses to consult the stars before making difficult decisions like signing contracts with the Amsterdam port authority.
